It was a normal trip to the TELEVISION station, I was the sales supervisor, and also responsible for writing, shooting, and editing several of the stations TV ads. There is always plenty to do in the small non-profit station in southern New Mexico. It absolutely was the first time that I had worked at a television station, specifically a Christian development station, having spent nearly all of my career in conventional radio as much as that place. I still remember the time that I first went into that station with my resume at hand, handed it across the table to the station manager, saying, Im Dianne James, here is my resume, and Id like to meet your needs. He looked at the application and we had a great talk. By the end of this talk, he said, Well, you will have to accomplish sales along with other work... I had heard that before. I had done that before, not television, but I understood that if I could sell potatoes, watermelons, and radio airtime, I could sell television. Also, there clearly was a more essential purpose for this work. I did so not know it then, but it was an opportunity to support people, and to generate a difference. The money was not great, because it was a non-profit, but it was also my first television job. The sole other TELEVISION station Id ever even visited was, as a kid, on my birthday when I was allowed to ring the bell on the Admiral Foghorn Show, a kind of West Texas model of Captain Kangaroo, in Odessa Texas. I did so not mention Admiral Foghorn. Id be among three salesmen, and would head out with the director to fulfill my given clients, during those first days at work. Well, in an ideal world, that will have happened. The manager was an extremely busy man. H-e didnt have time to hold someones hand and introduce them to everybody. So, one day while waiting for him to get off the phone, I do not wait any longer. I left and began making cold calls. Weeks passed until one day while going into the control room, I tripped and fell on the tiny little step-down into the room. I did not know a humans foot can bend that far backwards. I really could not go. Needless to say, I was on crutches for a couple months, and holding a quick scenario, making sales calls, and by then itd snowed. Maybe not a pleasant experience. After a particularly slow sales month, I was thinking that maybe this job wasnt designed for me, after all. My boss called me in to the office one day and said he wanted me to be the sales manager. He had always been the sales manager, and, to my understanding, so I remained, no-one else had ever held that position except him. The staying turned out to be a learning experience. It was during my tenure while the sales manager that the woman went into the station, desperate and hopeless. I asked her if I can help her, and she looked only a little bewildered. She said, with a slight Spanish accent, I dont know, I just came in here, I dont know why. My son got killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Cruces, and I recently got out of court. I found pain in her eyes. Tremendous pain. She was o-n the verge of tears, as she relayed the tale of how her son just happened to be in-the wrong place at the wrong time, when a bullet from a drive-by shooter took his life. Id kids of my very own, and at that moment something with-in me felt some of her pain. Well, there was no reason for her to be at the TV station, she didnt even know it was a television station; she said shed just wandered in, from the court house across the street. For a different way of interpreting this, we recommend you take a gander at partner sites. I discovered the braces o-n her feet, her graying hair and a look in her eyes that made me feel like she believed I could do anything about this. I shared with her, Wait, Ill be straight back. I considered the book of Job, and brought her a Bible from the office. This has helped me many times in my own life, and I think it will help in the event that you read this, I told her. She said ok, took the Bible, and lay down in the reception, and began to study. I informed her I had be in a little bit. I left the room to provide her time and energy to read it. When I returned, she was gone. The Bible lay o-n the couch, and I wondered if shed even read the passage. I felt bad, that maybe I should have gone back-to check on her sooner, but she was gone and nothing could be done. Time passed, and the CBS Sunday Morning personnel had arrive at Alamogordo to throw a special about gang violence with Howdy and Yahooskin Fowler as a part of it, with their cross-country camel trip, raising understanding of gang violence. The girl whod wandered to the station days before was certainly on my mind. I eventually found out who she was and named her in Las Cruces, to determine how she was doing, she had been so down, so depressed about her daughter, Id wondered what had happened to her. She said, Yes, I remember you. By the end of-the conversation she said, Many thanks. You saved my life. She had walked in the afternoon, I did not know what that person may do. I realized she was in pain, and very depressed. All I could do was communicate with her and she to me, and attempt to give some hope to her. I found out that no matter what our walk or situation in life, we are able to help people along the way. You dont have to become a saint to simply help some one, sometimes. Good thing, because I wasnt. All I knew is that she was so distressed, she may commit suicide. Suicide is not the solution, because what youre going through at the moment might be the ability that someone needs in-the future to keep them from committing suicide, or quitting o-n life- a source of future pleasure for you, to be able to truly help someone. Theres great pleasure in this existence for you, if you give it plenty of time to discover you. It is these tumultuous times, we that are prepared by these trials of life, for what we have to do as time goes on. Regrettably, too many just take their own lives, not knowing that they could help another person with their wisdom of having been in that pain, too. They dont realize that a person can do anything, an hour at the same time. Each day at a time. What it takes is speaking about it- even if its to some stranger. Maybe even a pastor. Many individuals try taking anti-depressants to cope with their problems, but I have discovered that the best and fastest method to face the most challenging circumstances is head-on, through the center of it. The perspective from which they are taking a look at the problem is manipulated by that pain, whenever a individual is feeling that much pain. For this reason, it seems impossible. It really helps to vent to another person who will listen. Find the one that will, even when its a stranger, since to-morrow is a new day.
