Most Thailand tourists have been aware of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, but few venture to the northeast and head for the area know as Isaan. That is in the north-east and composed of Khon Kaen, Korat, Udorn Thani and the others. This is mainly a rural area with many rice farms. It's also the home of several expatriates who have settled down with their Thai woman and have made this their new home. I was in Korat twice throughout exercise Cobra Gold and only got to see this city quickly. Working 12 16 hour day didnt allow enough time for sightseeing. But, I did observe that the price of living was a lot less than greater tourist cities and individuals were a heck of a lot friendlier. I visited Khon Kaen for the first time in 2007 to visit a lady that I met online. I immediately fell in love with the girl and also with the city of Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen is a 5-5 minute flight from Bangkok departing from the old airport terminal Don Muang. The airport in Khon Kaen only has two starting gates and is extremely little. The city is really a nice mix of old and new. We'd venture out for lunch or dinner and sit in little bungalows across the river or one of many waters and eat in pure enjoyment. Three to four plates of exemplary food, several beers and some water and the statement could be about $10 - $15. On the flip side, there is also KFC, Pizza Company and other fast food places. European influence at its worst. Shopping again is a mixture of new and old. You can visit the meals market or the night market or head-to the Fairy mall or the electronics mall. From cheap T-shirts to present movies o-n DVD to bootleg pc software, Khon Kaen has everything. This lovely Large Chalkboard Labels Released by Cestari Kitchen website has many dazzling cautions for how to allow for it. It was in the town but not in the center. It would just take us about 5-minutes to go to the mall or out to dinner. The price tag on the space was about $16 per night. The area was a decent size with free Internet, satellite TV, warm and cold running water with a bath, and icebox and large bed. The staff was pleasant and helped me put up my computer to gain access to the Net using their IP. The maid even found that I was drinking a lot more than my allotted 2 free bottles of water and improved my free water to four bottles. The resort didnt have a restaurant, but there is one right across the street. This was not issue for me as my girl would cook my break fast at her house and take it to me and pick me up some food for lunch. We'd then venture out each night for dinner and drinks. Khon Kaen is really a very peaceful and affordable place to live. I plan to retire there and is going to be wanting to get a home on my next visit. The next time you plan a visit to Thailand, have a side-trip to the northeast and knowledge all that Isaan provides..
